Trying to Really Cook

In everything people do, there are tools needed to complete the task at hand.  Sometimes, additional man power or machinery is added to get the job done faster and easier.  With the help of tools, man is able to complete more tasks rather than doing it the hard way.  Nonetheless, people still rely on each other’s strength when the situation cannot be completed by robotics.  Man is complex and even though scientists try to study the make up of him, there are still some things that science cannot explain.  There are many more aspects of man that has yet to be studied and understood.  But still man amazes his companions about the many things that he can do and is quite happy to know this.

In order for man to be strong and healthy, food is necessary.  The kinds of food that he eats give him the energy in order for him to go on through the day.  Healthy foods are recommended so that the body will absorb the best nutrition there is rather than feeding on junk.  One interesting thing about man, especially the children is that they tend to pretend about the things that they have never actually done.  Take for example cooking, the kids are not yet able to cook truly until their parents think that they can really cook.  So in the meantime, they try to cook play dishes in order to keep them entertained.  Another thing is that they seem to have knowledge on how to do this by merely observing the actions of the grown ups.

Coming up with their own “recipes” or cuisines can be entertaining to look at.  They would even set up plates and pretend that they are having a party and eating what they have cooked.  Just like in any eating rendezvous, they try to present the food in such a way that they would look delicious and mouth watering.  Adults should take credit for the actions of the children because even though they are still small, they can imitate the gestures and actions of the adults.  Children can imitate almost everything without you teaching them how to do it.

Parents should notice these actions by the kids.  Perhaps you can even lend them a helping hand and teach them how to cook properly even though they are not cooking on the stove.  The children can continue to play in their play kitchen until such time that they are ready to cook for real.  If the kids intend to cook real food, adults should be there to supervise and always be ready with a first aid kit.  Since they are neophytes in this endeavor, they might hurt themselves.  It is better to expect these things to happen and be ready with the necessary things which will be needed in cleaning the wound.

Whether the kids are really cooking or are just pretending to be cooking, adults should always be on their side.  Mishaps may happen and there is no way of telling whether it will be not so bad or worse.  But there are times that kids are uncomfortable of their parents’ attention.  You can always peek on your children just to make sure that they are okay.  Be aware of the actions of your children, they can ruin the food or make a mess on your kitchen.  You might even want to play with them and make them even happier by participating in their pretending activity.

If they are still uncertain of their readiness in real life cooking, they can always go back to “preparing” play food.  Doing this, the kids can still enjoy cooking though not real cooking.  Such activity can even enhance the child’s eye for detail.  They might even experiment on the presentation of the food even though they won’t be eating it.  Man is creative by nature and all he needs to do is to nurture and let it grow.  Learning to do this may take some time but a reward is waiting for them in the end.

Getting some “ingredients” like plants, flowers and perhaps other toys can take the place of the real raw food ingredients.  These can be helpful if your child wants to really get that feel of cooking.  They can even have a mini-stove that is made of clay in order to have fire.  The only problem here is that the kids might stick their hand or any other object in the fire and might cause an ablaze.  That would really smell like trouble.  However, reminding the kids that they should not do this can help avoid any fire.

Other things that the children can play with are the play kitchen accessories.  When they have mastered the functions as well as the proper handling of it, they might find holding and manipulating the real thing is just a piece of cake.  More so, the child can practice slicing and chopping vegetables or other raw ingredients with it.  There are some accessories that are made of plastic and can still cut through soft ingredients just like real steel knives.  When children accidentally cut their fingers, it won’t hurt that much since the accessory is not that sharp.

Come to think of it, there are some countries wherein the adults teach their children how to dice, slice and cook real food.  There’s no more playing around because they want their kids to learn and know how to cook food at an early age.  The children eagerly help out picking the vegetables and what recipe will they be doing.  This encourages family bonding and child independence at the same time.  There’s no wrong when the kid wants to help as long as the adults are there to guide them.

Children are fun to look at when they try to really cook in their kitchen play set.  They seem to know what they are doing just like what the adults are doing.  Trying to use the play knives and other accessories skillfully as if they are really cooking can be like a training ground for them.  Adults may sometimes underestimate the capabilities of the kids but giving them a chance to prove themselves will shed light to things they can really do.  There are times that children are able to come up with shortcuts and better ways of getting things done because of their curiosity.
